Women today have resorted to seeking help from the world of cosmetics and beauty products in an attempt to enhance and emphasize our God-given beauty. There’s nothing wrong with that. The only question is, are we enhancing our looks or are we endangering our health and risking what beauty we already have because of the products we use?
It’s no secret that chemicals and heavy metals are some components that are seen in a wide variety of beauty products. Despite the required tests and regulations involved in creating these kinds of products, the huge number of manufacturers and dealers all over the world cannot be controlled, making it difficult to ensure every single product produced is safe for humans. Here are some harmful chemicals to watch out for when purchasing beauty products:
Formaldehyde
In general, formaldehyde is a chemical commonly used as germicide, disinfectant, and preservative in medical laboratories and mortuaries. Apparently, it has made its way to some beauty products, such as hair relaxers, shampoos, hair dyes, and a few more. Short-term exposure to formaldehyde can cause nausea, skin allergy, scalp burns, and irritations, to name a few. The long-term effect – skin disease. Did you ever realize that whatever you’re using on your hair is the same as what they’re using for dead people? Freaked out? You should be.
Mercury
Mercury is a heavy metal and is used in thermometers, barometers, fluorescent lamps, and other gauges. Unfortunately, this is also a common ingredient found in some soaps, skin creams, lightening creams, makeup, and mascara. More and more countries have started banning production and distribution of products containing this; however, there are still some beauty products that are released in the market. Exposure to mercury can cause diseases related to the brain, kidney, and lungs.
Lead
Lead is another heavy metal used in batteries, bullets, and building construction. If you don’t know what your lipstick is made of, it probably has lead in it. Beware; there’s no safe level for lead. If ingested, it can cause permanent health damage to your nervous system. To be safe, you shouldn’t lick your lips or eat anything when you’ve your lipstick on. That also means no kissing while wearing lipstick.
There are a lot more harmful chemicals that may be found in beauty products these days. The key is to make sure you read the label. Check the ingredients and be aware of what the effects are. If a product doesn’t have a list of ingredients, just don’t buy it. But if you’ve become paranoid after reading this, then you can forget about these beauty products and go for natural products that can help you achieve the same results.
