In the pursuit of physical, emotional and mental well-being, we all know that a good night’s sleep is an important factor. A lack of sleep can have a destructive effect upon the body. Along with establishing a good sleep routine, one of the best ways we can help ourselves to get a good night’s slumber is to make sure we are sleeping on the right mattress.
This article takes a look at a recent survey into finding the best mattresses. A range of mattresses were tested for a range of factors including responsiveness and bounce, coolness, comfort levels and support. Memory foam and spring coil mattresses were also compared.
Which were the best?
Not surprisingly, the best mattresses were those which provided comfort and support. There was a clear correlation between mattress thickness and these two factors. Thicker mattresses have more top layers to provide comfort and bottom layers to provide support.
Size and sleeping position matter
The best mattress for an adult side sleeper should be on the firm side for extra support whereas a child may find a soft or medium-soft mattress is sufficient. If you sleep on your side you may prefer a memory foam mattress which will sink more keeping the spine aligned in spite of shoulders digging in to the mattress.
Time to name the winners…
Most supportive- The Wave by Casper
This was a clear leader. This is a medium-firm mattress that is the height of luxury. With a top of the range price tag, it is ideal for those who may need extra comfort and support. Casper are the market leaders in online mattress providers, so if you want something cheaper you could always look at their other ranges.
Weirdest- the Purple original mattress
If you’re looking for something a little quirky that looks like it might be better placed in space, then give this one a go. In spite of its egg crate appearance, its medium-firmness distributes pressure evenly, leaving the sleeper nicely cushioned as if they’d just fallen in to a trapeze net.
Firmest- The Plank by Brooklyn bedding
If you’re looking for super-firm which is just short of laying on concrete, then this is the mattress for you. The mattress can be flipped to provide two options- a .75” layer on one side or a slightly less firm 1.5” top layer on the other.
Best luxury mattress- Helix Midnight Luxe
With a coil base and luxurious memory foam top, this hybrid mattress was a clear favourite amongst the testers for both comfort and support.
Most luxurious without the price tag- Allswell by Walmart
If you’re on a shoe-string budget, this hybrid mattress is like the luxurious Helix midnight luxe with an innerspring base and a memory foam top. Whilst thinner and less comfortable than the Helix it’s still really comfortable.Which just goes to show, whatever the budget there is the perfect mattress out there to help you get a great night’s sleep.
